Mellaril
Mellaril is indicated for the management of schizophrenic patients that have not responded to other antipsychotic drugs. Due to the high risk of serious, potentially life-threatening conditions Mellaril is linked to the medication is not used until other methods have failed. An FDA "Important Drug Warning" was issued informing physicians of the labeling changes occurring on Mellaril.
Mellaril now contains a boxed warning indicating Mellaril has been shown to prolong the QTc interval in a dose related manner that is associated to sudden death and de pointes-type arrhythmias. The Mellaril Important Drug Warning advised all patient to be fully informed of the potentially deadly risks associated to Mellaril, as well as suggesting switching antipsychotic agents if possible.
