The Meridia deaths that have resulted from use of the diet pill were not surprising to many critics of the diet pill industry. The history of diet pills has been a string of deadly and dangerous pills and, there has yet to be a diet pill considered very effective and safe. The approval of Meridia closely followed the fen phen recall, a highly controversial and deadly diet pill, and many wondered if Meridia deaths would soon occur. The fear over suffering Meridia deaths did not seem to affect sales of the drug, though, and Meridia was quickly prescribed and is used now by an estimated 8.5 million people.
There are 29 U.S. Meridia deaths alone, and this Meridia deaths figure does not count the vast underreporting that occurs with prescription drug use. In response to the Meridia deaths and side effects reported, Public Citizen consumer group petitioned the FDA for the immediate removal of Meridia from the market in March 2002. The reports of Meridia death and other serious effects greatly outweighed what the consumer group described as minimal weight loss results.
