Multaq® Kidney Problems
Multaq® is a medication often prescribed to patients with heart issues, such as a cardiac arrhythmia, or irregular heartbeat. The drug has been shown to prevent those with heart problems from being hospitalized by helping the heart maintain a normal heart rhythm.
However, Multaq® therapy has is dangerous for patients with moderate to severe congestive heart failure and has been associated with renal failure. Risk of renal (kidney) damage increases with the dose of Multaq® prescribed.
Multaq® and Kidney Diseases
According to scientific research, there is a relationship between Multaq® and kidney disease and kidney problems. The kidneys act as filters for the body, removing the waste from the blood. In this way, medications, particularly serious ones such as Multaq® can lead to kidney failure.
A recent study showed that the drug has been linked to 387 reported adverse events and 24 deaths. The drug was approved in 2009 by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and has already caught public attention for some of its potential risks.
Multaq® and Impaired Kidney Function
Impaired kidney function can occur from medications that are toxic to the kidneys. Since the body relies on the kidneys to filter out toxins, its impairment can lead to serious illness, disease and even death.
Multaq® and Renal Failure
In some cases, the use of Multaq® can result in kidney failure. The risk of renal failure increases if the patient has existing kidney problems. Many drugs cause kidney failure and should be avoided if there are existing kidney problems or the risk of kidney problems.
Symptoms of Kidney Trouble
Kidney problems can occur at any time during Multaq® therapy. Symptoms of kidney failure include:
- High blood pressure
- Confusion
- Urinating at night
- Excessive thirst
- Swollen legs, feet and ankles
- Muscle cramps
- Paleness
- Bad breath
- Chest pain or pressure
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Headaches
