Multaq® (Dronedarone) Liver Injury Lawyer

Multaq® is a heart medication, also known by its generic name dronedarone, which was recently discovered to have high liver toxicity. The recently discovered Multaq® side effects may lead to liver failure. If you have taken Multaq®, and are now living with the effects of liver damage, you should contact a Multaq® lawyer. You may be able to receive compensation for your injuries.

Liver Damage Caused by Multaq®

Multaq® side effects were formerly thought to extend only to patients who had suffered heart failures. These patients were twice as likely to die from taking the dronedarone as patients who were not taking the drug. However, new evidence demonstrates that it has a clear liver toxicity that can cause serious health problems. Early effects of liver damage can be noted from the following symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Malaise
  • Itching
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Fever
  • Abdominal pain in the right upper quadrant
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the eyes or skin)
  • Dark urine
  • Light-Colored stools

Multaq® and Liver Diseases

In January of 2011 the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an alert to medical professionals about the recently discovered side effects of Multaq®. The previously unknown liver toxicity of dronedarone had caused acute liver failure in patients whose livers had been healthy prior to taking the drug. Side effects of Multaq® were ruled to be the only possible causation.

Although livers are able to regenerate themselves from a certain degree of damage, there is no cure when the liver has failed. Transplantation is required, and liver dialysis may be needed in order to keep the patient alive long enough to get a donated liver. To Multaq® patients have required liver transplants already, says the FDA. Multaq® has only been on the market since July 2009.
