Multaq® (Dronedarone) Liver Toxicity

The heart medication Multaq® has been found to cause severe liver problems that can include acute liver failure. Doctors who prescribed this drug prior to an FDA warning issued early in 2011 were unaware of possible liver toxicity.

If you are a former or current Multaq® user you should immediately consult with your doctor. If you have developed severe liver problems as a result of taking Multaq®, you should contact one of our Multaq® liver injury lawyers to find out if you qualify to file a lawsuit against the manufacturer.

Multaq®, which is the brand name drug marketed by the manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis, is known in generic form as dronedarone. It is used to treat abnormal heart rhythms known as atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.

What is Liver Toxicity?

The liver has many important functions in the metabolism, but one of its most important roles is in filtering toxins out of the body. There are certain drugs, including dronedarone, which instead of being filtered, actually damage the liver itself. When these drugs injure the liver it is known as liver toxicity.

Drugs with liver toxicity can cause severe liver damage, depending on the level of liver toxicity and the amount of exposure to the toxic agent. Dronedarone has been shown to have high liver toxicity, as it may lead to acute liver failure within 6 months of treatment with the drug.

FDA Multaq® Liver Injury Warning

The FDA warning, which was issued in January of 2011, warned of severe liver problems caused by Multaq®. At least two patients have developed acute liver failure following use of Multaq®. These patients had healthy livers prior to taking Multaq®, and required liver transplants to save their lives. Former Multaq® users should all seek medical attention, especially when they exhibit symptoms of severe liver problems, which include:

  • Fatigue and general discomfort
  • Fever, nausea, and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite and abdominal pain
  • Dark urine and light-colored stools
