Commonly prescribed to regulate the heartbeat of patients with cardiac arrhythmia, Multaq® (dronedarone) also reduces the risk of hospitalization for these patients. However, the drug is associated with a range of side effects, some of which can be long term.

Some patients have reported liver damage and abnormal and low liver function while using Multaq®. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) requires that the Multaq® label carry a warning about the possible side effects. The risk of liver damage is being further examined.

Can Multaq® Cause Liver Damage?

Recently, the FDA issued a safety announcement warning of the associated risk of acute liver failure and liver damage from taking Multaq®. The FDA urges patients to notify their physicians immediately if they experienced the symptoms associated with liver injury or toxicity. Patients are also advised to stop taking the drug if liver damage is suspected.
