Multaq® (dronedarone)

What is Multaq®?
Multaq®, generic: dronedarone, is an oral medication commonly prescribed to patients who have had a cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), such as atrial fribrillation or an atrial flutter. The drug is designed to prevent a patient from having to be hospitalized for these heart problems.
The drug Multaq® is prescribed to patients who have had this irregularity for 6 months or who suffer from heart conditions that could lead to hospitalization.
Common side effects of Multaq® include heartburn, itching and redness, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and stomach pain. Some patients complain of tightness in the chest, wheezing, breathing problems, slow heartbeat, fainting and weight gain.
A more serious side effect of Multaq® is a possible increase in the risk of heart failure in patients with moderate to severe Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). As a result, patients with a history of heart failure should not be prescribed dronedarone or Multaq®.
Multaq® Indications
Multaq® is prescribed to reduce the risk of hospitalization for patients that have experienced atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter and carry certain risk factors including age, diabetes or previous heart condition.
Multaq® Contraindications
Multaq® is a serious drug that is not for patients with NYHA Class IV heart failure or NYHA Class II-III heart failure who have been recently hospitalized. An FDA Advisory Committee reviewed Multaq® and required that a black box warning be added to the packaging to warn patients of the potential risks. According to reports, patients who take Multaq® and fall into the above classes of heart failure have an increased risk of death.
This heart medication should not be used by expectant or nursing mothers; patients with hepatic impairment; people taking drugs or herbal supplements with ephedra; people taking certain antidepressants; and those with a heartbeat of less than 50 beats per minute.
