Despite warnings from the FDA, reports are finding that many women are still becoming pregnant while using Accutane, a prescription used to treat acne.
Accutane is supposed to be prescribed to patients with severe cases of acne; however, FDA investigators also found that many who have minor acne are receiving the medication as well.
iPledge Program
After the FDA discovered the serious risks associated with Accutane for those who become pregnant, the iPledge program was put into effect and patients were required to be on birth control and get monthly pregnancy tests when on the medication.
Although the iPledge program is still in effect, pregnancies are still being reported due to false pregnancy results and patients forgetting to take their birth control.
According to research, 122 pregnancies were made public during the first year of the iPledge program and 78 of these women were taking the drug when they became pregnant.
Pregnancy Risks Associated With Accutane
Research has found that if a woman becomes pregnant while taking Accutane the chances of her baby having brain and heart defects or mental retardation are high.
This is why every man and woman taking the drug is required to enroll in the iPledge program and get tested before each monthly refill.
