According to some medical experts, the FDA's recent warning of heart risks linked to over-the-counter painkiller naproxen, sold under brand name Aleve, may have been exaggerated. Naproxen has been on the market for several decades and used for a wide range of ailments.
The study researcher linking Aleve to cardiovascular events, John Breitner, said that the risk Aleve could cause heart attacks was "not really" statistically significant, but other researchers think there could be an even larger risk because studies on long-term use of the drug have not been studied in depth. A Bayer spokesman, manufacturer of Aleve, said the study had not been fully evaluated to allow a comment as of yet. The study was halted after concerns of increased heart risks were discovered.
