Alternative Medicine May Help With Allergies

As Americans become concerned with the risk of dangerous side effects from prescription drugs, many are turning to alternative forms of medicine that help with symptoms of allergies or conditions like asthma.

According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, nearly 40 percent of people in the United States are trying some type of alternative treatment. Doctors add that an increasing number of seasonal allergy patients are asking about or experimenting with alternative medicine as varied as acupuncture therapy, herbal teas, and biofeedback.

Alternative Medicine Research

There is research that indicates that some alternative treatments like chiropractic therapy and probiotics can help patients suffering from seasonal allergies and asthma. However, most of these studies are conducted on a small-scale outside the U.S.

According to Barak Gaster, associate professor of medicine at the University of Washington, there is little harm in trying alternative medicine as most treatments are safe and carry very few side effects. “But they also tend to be somewhat less effective,” he adds.

Physicians and homeopathic practitioners also recommend that patients consult with a qualified doctor before taking the alternative therapy route as some herbal medicines commonly used for allergies have contraindications.

Furthermore, complementary alternative medicines could interact dangerously with prescription drugs or pose other serious side effects.
