A popular rheumatoid arthritis medication that is being given to some Alzheimer’s patients has experts worried.
Although the drug, known as Enbrel, showed improvement in Alzheimer patients, doctors say these findings may raise premature hopes in patients and families.
Study Conducted
A study was recently conducted on Enbrel and involved 12 patients who were taking the medication to treat Alzheimer’s.
“We often see verbal effects within a few minutes of the first dose,” explains Dr. Edward Tobinick, the director of the Institute for Neurological Research who served as lead in the study.
However, some experts remain skeptical stating that people with Alzheimer’s and their families could place value on the new findings of an immediate change in speech and language without taking into consideration any side effects.

Enbrel is an anti-inflammatory medication that is co-marketed by Amgen and Wyeth pharmaceutical companies.
“We need to see work in other laboratories by scientists without financial interest in the product,” say groups who are questioning the drug for this specific use.
Amgen has also reportedly expressed concern about Enbrel saying there hasn’t been enough evidence done on the drug yet.
