According to a new study, the number of children with behavioral problems like ADHD being treated with new antipsychotic medications, despite a lack of studies or proven efficacy amongst children, has continued to escalate. The new generation of antipsychotic drugs includes Clozaril, Risperdal, Zyprexa, Seroquel and Geodon.
Concern is due to the fact that an increasingly greater number of children are being prescribed antipsychotic drugs for disorders that they have not been proven to treat. Also, the side effects of these drugs in children are not yet understood. The largest increase in antipsychotic use is among adolescents between the ages of 13 and 18 for ADHD and conduct disorders.
