Avandia Suit Filed in Texas

A suit was recently filed against the manufacturers of Avandia, GlaxoSmithKline by two plaintiffs who claim the medication is harmful.

The product liability suit was filed by Kay Leeper and Fred Lands, who claim the drug company is guilty of engaging in persistent fraud by misrepresenting and failing to disclose the information regarding the safety of the medication.

GlaxoSmithKline Accused

The suit accuses GlaxoSmithKline of negligently allowing positive information about Avandia to reach the market while withholding negative facts about the medication from consumers.

According to the suit, Ima Sue Lands’ was prescribed the medication to treat her diabetes without being aware of the risks linked to the drug.

The plaintiffs claim that the drug is defective and that the company has subjected the public to the risk of cardio thrombotic events or cardiac injury.

Risks Linked to Avandia

Avandia has been a topic of much debate in recent months and in November the FDA updated the warning labels on the medication.

Among the risks linked to the diabetes medication are:

  • Chest pain
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure

The plaintiffs are seeking compensation for their mental anguish, pain and suffering and loss of income as a result of using the drug.
