Warning Issued About Avastin and Sutent Treatment

-July 16, 2008

A warning was recently issued by Genentech Inc., regarding a combination treatment that includes the medication Avastin, which could be linked to a type of anemia.

Doctors believe that Genentech’s top-selling drug Avastin when combined with Pfizer’s medication, Sutent, could be harmful.

Cases of Anemia Emerge

According to reports, a study involving cases of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia seen in Phase 1 kidney cancer, led to the ending of a mid-stage trial using Avastin and Sutent as a combination treatment.

In a letter posted by doctors on the FDA’s website, they inform patients that this combination treatment is not recommended.

What Do These Medications Treat?

Avastin helps cut off the blood supply to tumors and is currently being tested to be used in combination with other medications.

Sutent is another one of the most widely used drugs administered to treat advanced kidney cancer.

Risk of Combination Treatment

12 patients who received these medications together in their treatment reportedly developed microangiopathic hemolytic anemia.

Two of the cases were reported as being “severe” while others experienced various side effects on top of the anemia.
