Bextra sales suspended in Singapore

-April 9, 2005

Channel NewsAsia reported Friday that Singapore has suspended the sales of Bextra.

In response to studies indicating Bextra presents cardiovascular risks, Bextra has been banned in the United States, the European Union and Canada. The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) of Singapore confirmed no local cases of serious skin reactions have been reported.

Bextra, in addition to links to heart attacks and strokes, also carried a black box warning in the U.S., the strongest FDA issued drug warning, because of its link to a potentially fatal skin disease.

The HSA has advised patients taking Bextra to consult with their doctors for alternative medicines. Bextra entered Singapore's market in May 2003.
