Pfizer has voluntarily withdrawn Bextra from the New Zealand market. Last week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration asked Pfizer to remove Bextra from the market after deciding the risks of using Bextra outweigh its benefits, though Pfizer disagreed with the agency's request. Bextra is linked to increased risks of heart attacks and strokes, like all COX-2 inhibitors, in addition to a potentially deadly skin disease called Stevens Johnson syndrome.
