A recent report analyzes and compares the benefits and risks of various forms of birth controls on a woman’s body.
Researchers took a closer look at the contraceptive skin patch in comparison to the pill and vaginal ring.
Methods to Prevent Pregnancy
Although the choices in terms of birth control are typically all effective, some differences and risks remain.
“Basically, all of these methods were similar in preventing pregnancy,” explains Laureen Lopez, a research associate from Family Health International in Research Triangle Park.
Warnings Updated on Patches
The U.S. FDA recently updated warnings on drug labels for the contraceptive skin patch.
The updated warnings inform consumers that women using the patch are at greater risk for blood clots than those who use the pill.
Review Conducted
Researchers took a look at 11 randomized controlled trials to compare the patch, pill and ring in more than 6,000 women.
Women using the patch were more likely to experienced side effect and were more likely to terminate their use than pill users were.
