The FDA recently issued a warning to doctors and patients regarding the use of the diabetes drug Byetta.
The drug was approved in 2005 and is co-marketed by Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc., and Eli Lilly & Co.
Byetta Linked With Complications
FDA officials say that Byetta has been linked with acute pancreatitis, which can oftentimes be fatal.
According to the agency, 30 post-marketing reports of acute pancreatitis have been associated with the medication.
Amylin Plans to Update Labels
Amylin has reportedly agreed to update Byetta's label to add the risks of pancreatitis.
“It's a rare but serious event,” says Alice Bahner Izzo, spokeswoman for Amylin.
According to reports, 700,000 patients in the U.S. have used Byetta since being introduced.
Risks Associated with Drug
The FDA says that patients and doctors should be cautious with the medication and alert of the symptoms associated with acute pancreatitis.
