A study of New Zealand patients has found a similar risk of heart attacks and strokes among Celebrex users as Vioxx users.
Last September, Vioxx was taken off the market, putting into question the safety of the entire group of drugs called COX-2 inhibitors. The drug class included Merck & Co.'s Vioxx, as well as Pfizer Inc.'s Celebrex and Bextra.
The FDA recently asked Pfizer to remove Bextra from the market, allowing Celebrex to remain. The New Zealand national medicines monitoring unit has analyzed follow up information from 11,000 patients prescribed Vioxx and Celebrex in 2001.
According to its findings published in an international journal called Drug Safety, the results show Celebrex is just as risky as Vioxx, despite a wide margin of error, according to unit head Mira Harrison-Woolrych. Pfizer is challenging the study, saying four international studies failed to find any increased cardiovascular risks from Celebrex.
New Zealand health officials concluded the risks for all brands of COX-2 drugs outweigh the benefit and is expected to make a ruling on the drugs later this month. For more information on Celebrex dangers, please contact us to confer with a Celebrex Lawyer and learn your legal rights and options.
