As of March 15, participants in Louisiana's Medicaid program will have limited access to Celebrex and Bextra prescriptions because of claims the COX-2 inhibitors increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and other adverse health problems.
The group participants will only be able to get Celebrex or Bextra if they have a specific medical need for them opposed to other drugs like ibuprofen. A letter to be sent March 1 to Medicaid prescribers and pharmacists throughout the state will outline the details of the new policy.
Although Celebrex and Bextra still remain on the market, another popular COX-2 drug, Vioxx, was recalled last September because of the increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. A federal Food and Drug Administration advisory panel has since said that Vioxx was safe enough to rejoin Celebrex and Bextra on the U.S. market, and recommended that Celebrex and Bextra packages carry stronger warnings about the risks in a "black box" warning, the FDA's strictest warning after concluding all three drugs pose some level of heart risk. For more information on the Celebrex ban, please contact us to confer with a Celebrex Lawyer and learn your legal rights and options.
