A trial of Pfizer Inc.’s arthritis drug Celebrex was halted after patients taking the medicine had more than twice as many heart attacks as patients taking a placebo, the company announced.
The Celebrex findings were discovered just two-and-a-half months after a rival drug, Vioxx, was recalled from the market when a study found the drug doubled the incidence of heart attack and stroke among patients taking it for more than 18 months.
Both Celebrex and Vioxx belong to a class of drugs called COX-2 inhibitors. After Vioxx was recalled, the safety of the entire class of drugs has been questioned, but the belief was that Celebrex was somehow safer than other COX-2s.
Pfizer has not indicated if the company is considering pulling Celebrex from the market.
