Scientists working for the government are currently investigating a drug that is meant to help smokers quit cigarettes.
In recent months it has been speculated that the drug may increases thoughts of suicide and provoke violent behavior in those who take it.
Drug Reportedly Risky
The FDA announced earlier this week that they had received reports of patients experiencing mood disorders and having erratic behavior when taking Chantix.
Chantix is a medication manufactured by Pfizer Inc.
Although the reports are still fairly new, the FDA says they are gathering information and advising doctors to closely monitor patients who are taking Chantix.
FDA officials say that health care physicians and patients should be on the lookout for severe mood swings and strange behavior.
Sales of the drug reportedly totaled $101 million last year.
Man Dies From Chantix
The agency is currently narrowing their investigation in on a death believed to be caused by the medication.
The family of Carter Albrecht, a musician from Dallas, is blaming Chantix for his sudden death while taking the medication.
Albrecht was reportedly shot by his girlfriend’s neighbor when he tried to kick down the man’s door.
The FDA has requested that Pfizer send them any information regarding similar cases.
