More Children Should Be Getting Flu Vaccines

-September 29, 2008

This year, the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Academy of Pediatrics has expanded the recommended ages for children receiving the flu shot to include all those from 6 months to 18 years old. As a result, 30 million more children are expected to receive flu shots in 2008.

In previous years, medical experts only recommended flu shots for healthy children 6 months to 5 years old. It's important to note that getting flu vaccines is always recommended for those with chronic illnesses or suppressed immune systems, regardless of age.

The dramatic expansion of the recommendation for children is due to an acknowledgement that children are two to three times more likely than adults to get the flu.

What's New about the 2008 Flu Vaccine?
In addition to needing millions more flu shots, in 2008, the vaccines will also immunize against three new strains of the virus. While flu shots in previous years have consisted of three viral strains, two of the immunizations in last year's flu shot were ineffective and, therefore, replaced for this year's batch.

Another difference in this year's flu vaccinations is that experts say there will not be a shortage – in fact, the CDC estimates that over 260 million people will be successfully vaccinated in 2008.

To fill this large-scale demand, six different manufacturers throughout the U.S. are producing millions of flu shots.

Facts about the Flu

• On average, 60 million Americans contract the influenza virus each year.

• While the elderly are most likely to die from flu complications, each year, about 36,000 Americans die after contracting the flu.

• The flu shot is between 70 and 90 percent effective, depending on the age and health of an individual.

• In addition to children, the following people should also get a flu vaccination this year: adults over 50, pregnant women, those who live in chronic care facilities, and anyone who has experienced health complications from the flu in the past.
