Statins for Children Still in Question

-July 9, 2008

The debate continues regarding treating young children with statins, which are cholesterol-lowering drugs.

An influential group of doctors in the medical community are debating whether or not there is enough scientific evidence to prove these medications are safe for children.

No Long-Term Studies Conducted

Statins have proven effective in adults to lower the risk of heart disease and are reportedly among the most widely prescribed medications.

Although several studies have been conducted to analyze the effect of the drugs in adults, no such studies have been done regarding use in children.

“We don’t know the risks and the benefits,” explains Dr. Beatrice A. Golomb, a cholesterol expert from the University of California San Diego.

Guidelines Advise Testing

Guidelines were released earlier this week in response to the increased rate of obesity in U.S. children.

Although these children are at a higher risk for developing heart disease in the future, the guidelines suggest cholesterol testing be done on children between the ages of two and 10 before they’re prescribed the drug.
