The FDA has issued a warning against using infant formulas made in China, specifically Sanlu baby formula. The Chinese formulas are suspected of being contaminated with melamine, the same toxin that contaminated U.S. pet food and killed hundreds of cats and dogs last year.
It is illegal to import Chinese baby formula unless it meets with current FDA guidelines – which no Chinese baby formulas currently do.
However, although experts suspect that the contaminated formula hasn't yet hit U.S. markets, it may be circulating and available in specialty Asian markets. The FDA is currently investigating whether or not the contaminated formula is present in specialty markets.
What is Melamine?
Melamine is a durable, resilient type of plastic used to make buttons and particleboard, among other things.
When used in food products, melamine increases the foods' nitrogen concentrations so that they appear to contain more protein (A nitrogen index is used to determine protein concentrations in many types of food products).
The Chinese government is still investigating whether or not the melamine contamination was accidental or intentional. However, the Chinese health ministry has promised "heavy punishment" if the contamination was intentional.
Effects of Contaminated Infant Formula
Currently, over 1,200 Chinese babies have developed health problems as a result of consuming this contaminated formula. The most common side effect reported is kidney stones.
Other possible health problems resulting from melamine include kidney diseases, bladder stones and damage to the reproductive system. To date, only one Chinese baby has died due to use of contaminated infant formula.
