A recent contamination of Chinese infant formula has created an international scare, as it has caused 4 deaths and about 13,000 hospitalizations. Health authorities have said they expect these numbers to rise upon analyzing hospital records from earlier this year. Due to public outrage over the effects of such a widespread contamination, the chief of China's food quality agency has resigned.
Li Changjiang, the head food quality agent, is the first federal-level official to step down because of this contamination. However, several local government agents have already lost their jobs over the scandal, and a number of others have been arrested. Wang Yong, a top-level cabinet member, is slated to replace Changjiang.
Facts about the Chinese Infant Formula Contamination
The infant formula, which was produced by Sanlu, Yili and Mengniu (one of 22 manufacturers), was tainted with melamine, a type of plastic. When added to the formula, melamine makes the formula appear to have higher concentrations of protein when it, in fact, does not contain much protein at all.
Last year, melamine-tainted pet food was recalled in the United States when it sickened and/or killed thousands of pets.
Currently, experts estimate that over 53,000 infants and children have become ill after ingesting the melamine-contaminated formula.
What the Chinese Government is doing now
Wen Jiabao, the Chinese prime minister, has issued an international apology regarding this infant formula contamination. He has also vowed to thoroughly reform quality-control regulations so that no future Chinese food product will be contaminated in such a manner or cause such a huge scandal.
The Chinese government is offering subsidies to farmers affected by this contamination, as some have had to kill off their cattle and/or toss out their milk due to companies' refusal to buy their potentially tainted products.
