The Food and Drug Administration issued a warning on Friday regarding the safety of certain Chinese-made supplements for male sexual enhancement. According to the FDA, the supplements contain the same active ingredient as Viagra and may put users at risk.
Serious Drug Interaction Risk
Sildenafil, Viagra’s active ingredient, was found in some of the supplements, and others contained a similar chemical compound. Consumers taking one of these supplements together with certain diabetes, blood pressure and cholesterol drugs could experience dangerous drug interactions.
“Products like these put consumers at considerable risk because they contain undeclared active ingredients in FDA approved drugs that require a prescription to obtain,” said Dr. Janet Woodcock of the FDA and Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.
The Products
The products named in the FDA warning are packaged and distributed by Shangai Distributor Inc. and include:
- Shangai Ultra
- Strong Testis
- Lady Shangai
- Super Shangai
- Shangai Regular
- Shangai Ultra X
FDA officials advise consumers to discontinue use of these products and consult with a physician if they experienced any related adverse effects. Consumers can also report adverse events to the FDA’s MedWatch program.
