Researchers at Merck & Co., the makers of now withdrawn drug Vioxx, are saying the cardiovascular effects resulting in Vioxx's removal from the market are part of a "class effect."
Vioxx was recalled after links to increased risk of heart attacks and stroke were discovered, creating safety concerns over the entire class of drugs Vioxx belongs to, called COX-2 inhibitors. The FDA is currently reviewing Pfizer Inc.'s Celebrex and Bextra, the only two remaining COX-2 drugs on the market since the Vioxx recall.
The Merck researchers were addressing a panel of experts convened by the FDA to evaluate the safety of COX-2 drugs. Merck said in a statement that the class effect might extend beyond the COX-2 inhibitors and affect many older non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) as well. NSAIDs include common treatments like ibuprofen - the ingredient found in popular over-the-counter drugs Motrin and Advil.
