The American Heart Association's journal, Circulation, raised questions about AstraZeneca's cholesterol-lowering drug Crestor's potential dangers. Crestor has been associated to a higher risk of kidney, liver and muscle problems, according to a recent analysis of its side effects, when compared to other drugs in its same family.
The FDA defended Crestor in March after Public Citizen consumer group opposed its stay on the market, and the group has said the latest news will only further its efforts to get the drug off the market. AstraZeneca sold $908 million of Crestor worldwide last year, and an estimated 20 million Americans are believed to be taking Crestor and other similar drugs in its family - called statins.
Just one year after Crestor entered the market in October 2003, more than five million prescriptions were filled for the drug. The study showed complications were more common with Crestor than the other statins, such as Zocor, Pravachol, Lipitor, Nevacor and Lescol. Since many doctors are unsure of what to make of the Crestor safety concerns, many people are taking a better safe than sorry approach.
