Pfizer Faces Major Class Action Lawsuit Over Depo-Provera Dangers

December 28, 2005

A $700 million class action lawsuit has been filed against pharmaceutical company Pfizer on behalf of women who have been using the contraceptive method Depo-Provera and have developed osteoporosis. Filed in Toronto by women representing the age group of 28 to 32, the allegations claim that long-term users of the Depo-Provera injection have been diagnosed with serious bone density problems including but not limited to osteoporosis, fractures, brittle teeth, spine injuries, and hip injuries.

The Depo-Provera lawsuit also alleges that Pfizer failed to forewarn doctors and patients of the serious bone density risks associated with long-term use of the drug and had originally promoted the injection as a safe contraceptive method for long-term use. Prior to studies performed in 2004, warnings for the drug consisted of less severe side effects such as weight gain, irregular bleeding, headaches and bloating. It wasn't until 2004, that Pfizer warned American and Canadian officials of the serious threat of bone density loss associated with Depo-Provera, advising that the drug should not be used as a long-term contraceptive method.

The initial appeal of the Depo-Provera injection was its easy approach to a nearly 99 percent effective method of birth control. Depo-Provera users are given an injection every three months that will remain effective for the following thirteen weeks without maintenance. However, women using this method as a long-term approach to birth control have shown to have irreversible and serious bone density loss.

A prosecuting attorney in the Depo-Provera lawsuit states, in regard to the plaintiffs, "They are all too young to be developing osteoporosis." Pfizer issued a statement saying that they are prepared to vigorously defend the lawsuit, emphasizing that Depo-Provera is an important option for women and is used safely by millions around the world.
