U.S. health regulators recently made an announcement warning about more risks found with a widely used diabetes drug.
The drug in question is Byetta, a product of Amylin Pharmaceuticals Inc.
More Risks Found with Byetta
The FDA received six more reports of hemorrhagic or necrotizing pancreatitis requiring hospitalization earlier this week.
Two of the reports involved patients who had died taking the medication.
Among the risks found with Byetta is pancreas inflammation, which appears to be the diabetes medications most common risk.
Stronger Warnings Suggested
Since these reports, the FDA says they are working on adding stronger warning labels to the drug and it is still being decided whether or not the medication will receive a “black box” warning.
Amylin says they will be more than willing to work with the FDA to update the labels and ensure patient safety.
Problems in the Past
The new reports of risks follow earlier warnings from October when the FDA found 30 reports of pancreatitis in patients using Byetta.
At the time Amylin said they would report the findings and warn patients and doctors; however, many question how much has been done since more people are encountering health problems.
