$10.5M Settlement Reached in Drug Lawsuit

A $10.5 million settlement was recently reached in a suit filed by a woman living in Utah who claims a face medication caused her to develop a disease.

The suit was filed against Roche, the pharmaceutical company who makes Accutane, which is an acne treatment.

Lawsuit Claims

According to the suit, Kamie Kendall, 24, developed inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) from taking Accutane.

She reportedly has been taking the medication on and off since she was 12-years-old and was diagnosed with IBD in 1999, which forced her to get her colon removed.

The suit claims that the company knew about the drug’s link to IBD but didn’t warn consumers.

Girl Suffers From Disease

Kendall is one of nearly 20 Utahans who has suffered from the disease due to taking Accutane.

“IBD is a very difficult disease to deal with,” explained Kendall’s attorney, Mike Hook.

Accutane was approved by the FDA in 1982 and is prescribed to patients who have problems with severe acne.

The drug has also been linked to birth defects and psychiatric problems.
