Epilepsy Drug Could Cause Birth Defects

-July 22, 2008

According to recent reports, the epilepsy medication topiramate could increase the risk of birth defects in pregnant women.

Researchers say the risks are high whether the drug is used alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

Risks Found with Topiramate

Topiramate is a commonly prescribed anti-seizure medication that is used by many who are suffering from epilepsy throughout the country.

The medication can also be used to treat migraine headaches and until now the link between topiramate and birth defects had not been analyzed.

Study Reveals New Findings

Researchers recently conducted a study to better understand the medication and its risks in pregnant women.

For the study, data on women was collected and the researchers found that of the 178 babies born, 16 suffered from birth defects.

Among the babies who had birth defects, three of the mothers were reportedly taking topiramate alone, and 13 were taking the drug in combination with others medications.

“All women should clearly understand the risks and benefits of their therapy,” explains Dr.Orrin Devinsky, the director of the New York University Epilepsy Center.
