FDA Warns Against Buying Fake ED Drugs

-January 7, 2007

The FDA recently issued a warning to men who are using dietary supplements to treat erectile dysfunction (ED).

According to reports, many of these types of dietary supplements contain prescription drugs that are not on the labels and can be harmful to some patients.

Supplements Sold Online Pose Risks

Officials from the FDA claim that many men are taking various dietary supplements without being fully aware of the side effects and risks.

There is particular concern over supplements that are being sold over the internet.

“The number of these problematic products available on the Internet appears to be increasing,” claims Linda Silver, spokeswoman for the FDA’s Internet and Health Fraud Team.

Silver says that because many of these products claim they are “all-natural” consumers assume that they are safe.

Product Risks

When the FDA recently investigated dietary supplements sold online, they reportedly found that six of the 17 products tested had sildenafil, which is an active ingredient in Viagra.

Vardenafil, which is a similar substance that’s found in Levitra was also found in some of the dietary supplements.

Although both of these medications are used to treat ED, many of them are imported from other countries illegally.

For men with high cholesterol, heart disease and diabetes, these medications can often negatively interact with other prescriptions.
