FDA Meets to Discuss Drug Safety

-July 3, 2008

Earlier this week the FDA met to discuss the ongoing battle between the drug industry and critics over drug safety.

The fight continues over how much effort companies are putting forth to prove medicines are safe.

FDA and Doctors Join Forces

According to reports, FDA experts voted 14-2 at the two-day meeting that diabetes drugs should be more scrutinized to ensure they don’t cause heart attacks in patients.

The doctors who attended the discussion agreed and suggested the diabetes medications be tested for several years in 2,000 diabetics without heart disease before they gain approval.

In addition, after hitting the market, these drugs should be required to pass through bigger studies that follow tens of thousands of patients over an extended duration of time.

Eliminating High Risk of Prescribed Drugs

The idea behind the proposal is that it’s a model which can be applied to various types of drug to eliminate risks.

“I think there’s a real opportunity now to address the controversy over risk,” explains Clifford Rosen from the Jackson Laboratory. “It does bring some level of resolution to the issues that were brought up over the past year.”
