The FDA recently announced more safety concerns over the popular Eli Lilly and Co. medication, Zyprexa.
The drug, which is prescribed to treat acute and long-term cases of schizophrenia, has been controversial in the past few months and the FDA has found yet another risk linked to the medication.
New Risk Found with Medication
According to the FDA, the injectable formulation, which is typically referred to as Zyprexa Adhera, has proven to be an effective treatment for those suffering from schizophrenia.
However, advisers are once again evaluating whether or not the benefits outweigh the risks this week.
“Excessive sedation events are a serious safety concern because of the severity of excessive sedation, the unpredictable characteristics, and relatively high incidence,” explains a staff member from the FDA.
Excessive sedation is just one of the many risks associated with the medication and according to the FDA it is, “a serious safety concern” that they feel needs more looking into.
Other Safety Concerns
Some other risks that have been reported linked to Zyprexa, include:
· Increase in stroke
· High blood pressure
· Weight gain
