Additional Fentanyl Patches Recalled

-February 19, 2008

More fentanyl patches were recalled for a second time due to a flaw that reportedly could cause patients, and potentially caregivers, to overdose on the potent medication.

Until now, the patches have been sold throughout the country by Actavis South Atlantic LLC.

Initial Recall Issued Last Week

The patches were initially recalled last week by PriCara, which is a division of Johnson & Johnson.

The newest warning was issued today and this recall includes 25-microgram-per-hour, 50-microgram-per-hour, 75-microgram-per-hour and 100 microgram-per-hour patches.

The recalled patches have expiration dates from May through August 2009.

Why Are the Patches Being Recalled?

According to reports, the patches may have a defect that could cause them to leak and put patients and caregivers at risk for overdosing on the drug.

Direct contact with the “opioid” drug could result in difficulty breathing followed by a potentially fatal overdose.

Officials at the company say that any patches that are damaged should be disposed and not handled.
