The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently issued a warning regarding the risks associated with fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drugs.
The FDA says a box warning needs to be added to the prescribing information for these medications.
Risks Linked to Medications
According to research, the drugs pose an increased risk of developing tendinitis and tendon rupture to patients.
After discovering these findings, the FDA also suggests a Medication Guide be created to inform patients of the risks pertaining to fluoroquinolone antimicrobial drugs.
The boxed warning and Medication Guide is hoped to strengthen the existing warning that is already included on the prescription boxes.
Fluoroquinolones Can be Harmful
These types of drugs are reportedly associated with increased health risks, specifically for those over the age of 60.
Physicians are advised to warn their patients and be on the lookout for tendon pain, swelling and inflammation in those who are prescribed fluoroquinolones.
