Glaxo Drug Proves to be Ineffective

-May 28, 2008

A drug that was recently introduced by GlaxoSmithKline is now being questioned for its effectiveness in patients.

The experimental drug is supposed to decrease the amount of bleeding that occurs in patients who have a rare blood disorder.

Company Seeks Drug Approval

According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Promacta does nothing to significantly lower bleeding in patients, like it’s supposed to.

However, Glaxo is still seeking approval for the medication, claiming the medication treats a disorder that prevents blood from clotting, which can cause excessive bruising and bleeding in patients.

FDA Says Drug Doesn’t Work

The FDA recently announced that studies on Promacta conducted by Glaxo “do not provide robust evidence to support” their claim that the medication is effective.

The two studies submitted to the FDA regarding the drug reportedly show no real difference between patients taking Promacta and those who don’t take the drug.
