Novartis To Confirm Gleevec Heart Risks in Letter

Novartis To Confirm Gleevec Heart Risks in Letter

-October 4, 2006

Novartis has announced plans to send a letter to U.S. doctors, warning of the potential heart risks associated with its groundbreaking cancer drug Gleevec.

The safety of the drug recently came under scrutiny when a study published in the journal Nature Medicine linked it to serious heart damage. Novartis subsequently issued a warning letter to Canadian doctors, advising them not to prescribe the drug to patients with a history of high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease.

"A letter with similar information will be sent to U.S. physicians in the next few days," said Geoff Cook, spokesman for Novartis.

Experts hailed Gleevec as a breakthrough cancer drug upon its approval by the Food and Drug Administration in May 2001. Since that time, it has been widely used in the treatment of myeloid leukemia and gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

Despite its effectiveness in treating such conditions, patients who are taking Gleevec or similar cancer drugs are advised to consult with a physician to weigh the risks and benefits.

The authors of the recent study suggested that similar drugs, like Bristol Myers Squibb's Sprycel, may also carry potential heart risks.
