Earlier this week parents were warned by California health officials about the potential risks associated with a liquid herbal supplement.
The supplement has been marketed for colic and teething pain.
Infant Becomes Sick
A recall was issued for Baby’s Bliss Gripe Water after several bottles tested positive for a parasite.
Researchers believe the parasite found, known as Cryptosporidium, may be the reason that a six-week-old infant living in Minnesota became ill.
Parasite Causes Recall
After the U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducted lab tests, researchers confirmed the existence of Cryptosporidium within the formula.
Cryptosporidium is a parasite that can cause diarrhea and intestinal infections when consumed.
The supplement’s distributor, MOM Enterprises, recalled 17,600 bottles of the apple-flavored water, which was being sold over the Internet and in stores throughout the country.
Health Problems
According to state health officials, people who become infected with the parasite typically show symptoms within 10 days.
Officials have advised consumers to stop using the product and immediately see a pediatrician if they have a child who was consuming the product.
