Study Shows Risks of at Home Prescriptions

-July 29, 2008

A study being conducted at the University of California San Diego details the dangers of mixing prescription medications with alcohol.

According to reports, more Americans are dying due to prescription misuse and from mixing over-the-counter medications with alcohol.

Study Shows Health Complications Linked to Mixing

Renowned sociologist, David Phillips, from UCSD is conducting the study, which other researchers are calling “groundbreaking.”

According to Phillips, health providers need to begin warning patients about the risks linked to mixing alcohol and medications.

He says the need is especially relevant now seeing as medications are more commonly being taken at home as opposed to the hospital.

More Medications Being Taken at Home

Doctors across the country agree with Phillips, claiming that health care has shifted from inpatient to outpatient settings.

As a result, there is less medical supervision involved with patient medication use.

“We’ve just assumed that patients can handle the responsibility,” says Phillips.

Physicians are also prescribing lethal drugs like, fentanyl, more now and as a result more than 1,000 people in the U.S. have overdosed.

Researchers claim that the amount of deaths that have occurred from patients taking prescriptions at home rose by 3, 196 in the last 22 years.
