Impotence Drugs Get New Warning on Hearing Loss

-October 19, 2007

Impotence drugs used by millions of men in the United States now carry a new warning about the risk of sudden hearing loss. The drugs affected by the recent Food and Drug Administration action include Viagra , Levitra, and Cialis.

Revatio, a pulmonary hypertension drug, also carries the updated warning because it contains an ingredient used in Viagra.

Reports of Sudden Hearing Loss

The FDA action was prompted by 29 reports of sudden hearing loss in men taking one of the three impotence drugs. According to an agency ear, nose, and throat specialist, the men experienced hearing loss almost immediately—within hours or days—after taking one of the drugs.

“We don't know enough to say that it's ironclad caused by the drugs, but we see enough to say we can't ignore it either,” said Dr. Robert Boucher.

The hearing loss was reportedly temporary in one third of the case. The FDA is still investigating the remaining cases.

Big Business

Pfizer, which makes Viagra, said the drug has been used by approximately 30 million men since the FDA approved it in 1998. About 12 million more have used Cialis, according to Eli Lilly, the drug's maker.

Previous Labeling Change

In 2005, the drugs underwent another labeling change related to increased risk of vision loss . Men who experience vision or hearing problems after taking an impotence drug are urged to contact their physicians promptly.
