Study Shows Increase in Prescription Drug Use

-May 14, 2008

According to a recent study, more than half of all insured Americans are currently taking prescription medications for chronic problems.

The study revealed that the most commonly used medications are ones to lower high blood pressure and cholesterol.

More Americans Medicated

The study conducted regarding prescription drugs was done by Medco Health Solutions Inc.

Health experts agree that this increase in prescription use is not due a worsening of the public’s health, but because of more aggressive treatments by doctors.

“Unless we do things to change the way we’re managing health in this country…things will get worse instead of getting better,” explains Dr. Daniel W. Jones, president of the American Heart Association.

Prescription Statistics

Statistics show that Americans spend more money on prescriptions that any other country.

Medco’s study revealed that 51 percent of adults and children living in the U.S. were taking one or more prescription drugs for a chronic condition per year.

Most of these medications are supposedly taken daily and 28 percent of women, 22 percent of men, take five or more medicines on a regular basis.
