A lawsuit was recently filed by a Pfizer Inc. official who is accusing the company of boosting the sales of Lipitor through illegal marketing.
The suit claims that Pfizer falsely marketed their top-selling drug through a campaign of misleading educational programs that were given to doctors.
Former Employee Exposes Company
Jesse Polansky filed the suit against his former employer claiming that the educational programs they were using to market the medication, which is prescribed as a cholesterol treatment, “led thousands of physicians to prescribe Lipitor for millions of patients who did not need the medication.”
Pfizer claims in a statement that the accusations are without merit and they deny taking part in any off-label promotions.
Dr. Polansky was employed at Pfizer from 2001 to 2003 as the director of outcomes management strategies.
Claims Against Pfizer Spark Concern
The allegations that have been made against Pfizer have sparked concern regarding the state of the medical-education programs that are being used as sales pitches for the “off-label” use of drugs throughout the country.
Over the summer, a congressional committee reportedly met to discuss their concerns over the programs and concluded that something needed to be done about the little oversight they are often given.
