New reports have linked the popular cholesterol-lowering medication, Lipitor, with memory loss and hazy thinking.
Some doctors are worried that statins like Lipitor, although helpful for the heart, could be hurting minds, particularly in females.
Doctors Concerned About Female Patients
“This drug makes women stupid,” stated Dr. Oril Etinigin, the vice chairman at New York Presbyterian Hospital.
According to Etinigin, the typical woman taking Lipitor who is in her 40’s is typically unable to concentrate and recall words.
However, tests showed that when the women stopped using the statin, the symptoms ceased.
More Research Needed
Since thinking and memory problems are typically hard to quantify and since many people taking Lipitor are elderly, doctors say that more research needs to be conducted on the medication.
However, anecdotes linking statins to memory loss have reportedly been common for years and some doctors think the chronology is a red flag.
Dr. Gayatri Devi says that he’s had at least six patients who have experienced memory loss when taking a statin.
