A recent study conducted at the University of Oxford has found that men who eat meat and dairy products may be as much as 40 percent more likely to develop prostate cancer than their peers who don't regularly consume these types of foods.
According to this research, eating meat and dairy products increases men's levels of Insulin-like Growth Factor-1 (IGF-1), a hormone that regulates the life cycle of cells.
While IGF-1 is key to helping children grow into their adult bodies, for adults, this hormone primarily regulates cell growth and death. However, when present in abnormally high concentrations, IGF-1 may also prevent cells from dying, which can contribute to cell mutations.
Consequently, since eating meat and dairy is a factor that increases men's levels of IGF-1, it may also be responsible for causing cell aberrations that ultimately lead to prostate and other cancers.
Complications of the Study
The findings of this Oxford study are based-research performed on about 9,000 men. Although the analyses of the effects of diet were thorough, researchers, led by Dr. Andrew Roddam, acknowledged that factors aside from diet alone may also contribute to higher levels of IGF-1 in men.
For example, a man's overall health, stress levels and genetic predispositions can also be factors that raise his IGF-1 concentrations higher than his peers who also eat similar diets.
Nevertheless, while the elements that affect IGF-1 levels are complicated and deserve further research, this study has highlighted a lifestyle factor – specifically, diets high in meat and dairy – that increase men's risk of prostate cancer. Similarly, this study also found that higher levels of IGF-1 increase the chances that cancers will grow faster and spread to other parts of the body.
As a result, researchers and medical experts are urging men with a family history of prostate cancer to eat healthful diets with low to moderate amounts meat and dairy products.
