According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more deaths involving the prescription painkiller fentanyl have been reported.
The CDC says 1,013 deaths have been reported involving overdoses of patients using the drug in the United States.
What is Fentanyl?
Fentanyl is a synthetic opiate that is similar to the commonly used painkiller, morphine, but is much more powerful.
The drug is typically prescribed to patients who are experiencing severe pain after surgery and it sometimes given to those who have chronic pain.
The drug can be administered via an injection, patch or in lozenge form.
Prescription Drug in Question
Medical experts claim the medication is 30 to 50 times more potent then heroin, which is why many patients who are prescribed the drug get instantly addicted.
In 2005, the number of overdoses reported rose from 11,155 to 22,448 deaths in America.
The highest number of deaths reported in relation to the painkiller was shown to be in Chicago, followed by Philadelphia and Detroit.
