More studies have recently been released regarding the high risks associated with the anti-bleeding medication, Trasylol.
According to reports, Trasylol, which is produced by Bayer AG, is more likely to cause death in patients in comparison to those who are given a different drug or nothing at all.
Medication Uses and Side Effects
Trasylol is generically referred to as aprotinin and is typically used to help prevent patients from having bleeding complications after having bypass surgery.
However, in recent months many harmful side effects have been linked to the medication including severe kidney problems that have cost several patients their lives.
Last fall, the makers of the medication suspended its sales after a Canadian study showed there was a higher incidence of deaths in those who were taking it.
Two More Studies Reveal Risks
Recently, two other studies were conducted to analyze the effects of Trasylol on patients after surgery.
One study took a look at more than 10,000 patients who underwent bypass surgery and discovered that 6.4 percent of those who were given Trasylol died within 30 days of their procedure.
Another study, which was headed by Dr. Sebastian Schneeweis of Harvard Medical School, analyzed 78,000 patients given the drug.
This second study found that there was a 64 percent greater chance that patients who took the drug would risk death, than those who didn’t take the drug.
“Had this been done 10 years ago with Trasylol, many lives would have been saved,” explains Dr. Wayne A. Ray, a professor of medicine at Vanderbilt University.
