Natrecor Heart Drug Study to be Launched

–June 5, 2006

Johnson & Johnson have announced preliminary plans to conduct a massive study of the heart drug Natrecor . This announcement comes one year after the drug company began receiving pressure to conduct such a study in light of evidence suggesting Natrecor can cause kidney failure and death within one month of use.

In June 2005, Harvard cardiologist Eugene Braunwald and other experts urged that a Natrecor safety study be conducted immediately. It has taken Johnson & Johnson a year to determine the very preliminary details about this much-needed clinical trial.

The details of this clinical trial have yet to be determined. Natrecor's maker has yet to agree on what academic center will lead the study or who the lead investigators will be.

The FDA approved Natrecor (nesiritide) in 2001 to treat hospitalized patients with acute decompressing heart failure. This condition leaves patients, who are difficult to treat and often very sick, gasping for breath.

Following Natrecor's approval, many experts wondered if the drug was truly safe and effective in treating this type of heart failure.

Johnson & Johnson's subsidiary unit, Scios, who actually manufactures Natrecor, has been accused of aggressively marketing this drug. This drug has also come under scrutiny for problematic off-label prescribing practices.

The possible risk of kidney failure and death associated with Natrecor were known even prior to this drug's approval, yet the drug was allowed to enter the market.

If you or a loved one has taken Natrecor and suffered serious side effects such as kidney failure or death, assistance is available. Please contact us to speak with a qualified attorney who can evaluate your case and help you receive compensation for your losses and suffering.
